The Dunajec River Gorge (Polish: Przełom Dunajca; Slovak: Prielom Dunajca; German: Dohnst-Schlucht) runs through the Pieniny Mountains in the south of Poland and the north of Slovakia (as Dunajec is the border river between the two countries in the area). The gorge is characterized by some of the most interesting geological and geomorphological structures and area-specific natural ecosystems with little anthropogenic influence. Szczawnica has many snow skiing trails and slopes. The longest at Palenica (2 km) is fitted with 4-chair ski lift. There are 5 ski trials. The one of them (ski trial 3 –“Szafranówka II”) is permitted by the FIS (International Ski Federation) competitions in the slalom and giant slalom. The ski trial 5 “Szafranówka – HALFPIPE” - many times games were held here in the giant slalom, parallel slalom and halfpipe including Polish Cup and all snowboard competitions during the Universiade in 2001.
What is more, due to the presence of alkali sorrel springs and favorable climatic conditions, Szczawnica is a well-known resort town since the mid nineteenth century. There is also the new Uzdrowiskowe Muzeum, which presents more than 350 different types of artifacts associated with the local therapeutics, archival documents, drawings, plans of buildings, old photographs, postcards and books.
